# Template settings

Template settings combine literal text with named or zero-based positional field placeholders. A placeholder states the field escaping grammar.

The row separator appears between rows only. Put a required final newline in the literal row or result template. Input must match literal separators; mismatches are data errors.

Use a statement `SETTINGS` clause. Defaults in `system.settings` are read-only;
format settings cannot be persisted with `SET`. Put input settings before
`FORMAT`, because the bytes after the format name are input data.
